People attend service for Good Friday, good cause

AUSTIN — Just ahead of Easter, more than 14,000 people gathered at the Erwin Center to celebrate Good Friday and help victims of sex and human trafficking.

The Good Friday service included more than 300 churches around Austin. All donations will go toward helping build a retreat for local and statewide victims of sex and human trafficking.

“We have so many victims that need help that need some kind of shelter,” said Austin Police Sgt. Bob Miljenovich with the Austin Police Department’s Human Trafficking Unit.

The shelter will be a 50 acre retreat right outside of Austin called The Refuge Ranch. The $6.5 million facility will help up to 48 girls, ages 11 to 17.
